Theme: JESUS IS THE NAME
Texts: Pro.18:10,21; Matt.1:21; Acts 4:12; Phil.2:9-11
Last month, our illumination was beamed on The Blood of the Covenant which was offered through the eternal Spirit and presently speaking in heaven (Heb.12:24). It was shown to be an indisputable weapon of war (Rev.12:11).
In this edition, we shall be exploring another irrefutable spiritual instrument–the name of JESUS.
At such a time when evil appears as the norm and wickedness is enveloping all facets of the society at an alarm rate, a believer cannot afford to lack knowledge of the inherent characteristics of the exalted Name.
Our message shall come under 3 sub-topics viz
- THE POWER OF GIVEN NAMES
- THE POWER IN THE NAME OF JESUS
- THE CONFORMITY OF EVERY CREATURE
Topic: THE POWER OF GIVEN NAMES Subtexts: Lk.1:13-20, 57-64
One of the ironies of the latter days is that while knowledge is known to have increased, many believers are very deficient in the knowledge of kingdom ways and principles.
Though names are principally used for identification purposes, the place of scriptural appellation cannot be over emphasized. There are different schools
of thought as to how names relate to a person‟s personality. What is very apparent is that people raised and used by God in the scriptures always reflected their names. So we discovered that:
There is power inherent in names that confer meaning and value. In the majority of times, the meaning of a name was significant. Some are creedal statements like Joshua (Num.13:16) which means
Yahweh is salvation; Uzziah (2Chro.26:1) which means
Yahweh is my strength. These names reflected in the destinies of the bearers.
There were names given to function as prophesy as in Hosea‟s family (Hos.1:3-11) and Isaiah‟s offspring: Shear-Jashub which means
“areminant shall return” (Isa.7:3-4); Maher-Shalal-Hashbaz means
“swift is the plunder, speady is the prey” (Isa.8:1-4).
There were names given as a revelation or description of the character or personality of an individual or historical circumstance like Jacob (Gen.25:26) which means
supplanter/cheat. Therefore, names reflected the personality at the core.
Names were also associated with transformation of destiny by reflecting new purpose for example Abram (
exalted father) was changed to Abraham (
father of many nations), and Sarai (
my princess) to Sarah (
noble woman or lady) reflecting a broader universal title which signifies her ultimate destiny as the mother of nations (Gen.17:5,15; 25:1-7). Likewise, crafty Jacob was changed to Israel meaning
Prince of God; God striver, one who wrestles with God (Gen.32:28; 35:10). This new name has defined the destiny of Jacob‟s
offsprings.
The unique ministry destined for the offsprings of Zachariah and Elizabeth was reflected in his name John (meaning
God is gracious) His anointing from the womb, ascetic lifestyle and fiery message that broke a generation of indifferent people, all relayed the graciousness of God upon a man‟s life (Lk.1:13). The same truth holds for John the Beloved who outlived other apostles and passed through the crucible of Emperor Domitian‟s banishment in the Isle of Patmos, to gain the revelation of humanity‟s final destination.
This truth holds for the Vessel by which humanity would be saved. He was to be called JESUS (Heb. Yeshua or Yehoshua or Joshua) which means“Yahweh saves”, as He will save His people from their sins (Matt.1:21).
Now, the appreciation of the power of words or confession will make one see the need to give positive scriptural names to offsprings, as calling the name for identification amounts to confessing it to the bearer (Pro.18:21; Rom.10:10). Jacob understood this and so refused to call his last born Benoni–„
son of my sorrow‟,but rather Benjamin–„
son of the right hand’(Gen.35:18).
Believers must prayerfully get dissociated from all negative names (reflecting sad occurrences or involving demonic entities) and take scripturally healthy, positive names for self and offsprings (cons. 1Chro.4:9-10).
We must reignite those names given to us by revelation, for God gives names that are unique to our personal circumstances.
Meanwhile, the sinner must avail himself the privilege of accepting Jesus by repenting of his sins to enjoy the salvation that He brought (Matt.11:28-29; Mk.8:36; Heb.2:3-4).
