  • Topic:  FREEDOM FROM FAMILIAR SPIRITS
  • Subtexts: Jn. 4:35-38; Gal.6:7
Familiar spirits are unclean spirits, demonic entities or personalities, that work closely with human demonic practitioners, as witches/wizards, diviners, soothsayers, and other occult practitioners.   They are called familiar spirits, because they operate closely with humans or individuals and develop intimacy with the individuals, making such individuals yield or adapt to their controls and life style.   They tend to subtly manipulate people to come under their influences consciously or unconsciously. The Hebrew word familiar is translated Ob (pronounced as, Obe), it is typical of strange communications between mediums (consultants with spirits, witches, diviners, soothsayers etc.) and the spirits that they work with.   The LORD in the scriptures out-rightly condemned, the act of consulting with familiar spirits in whatever form. The warning is such strong that HE (God) commands any such practitioners or consulters to be put to death to keep God‟s people from spiritual contamination. In fact, the prohibition is not a mere warning but a commandment (Lev. 19:31, 20:27).   Saul, the first king of Israel was slain on this account. (1 Chro. 10:13-14).   Familiar spirits work closely with individuals; monitor them with the sole aim of deceiving, distracting, disorganizing, killing and eventually destroying them. The Lord Jesus rightly called them thieves (Jn. 10:10; 2 Cor. 2:11).   In some cases, they the familiar spirits disguise as genuine persons, to gain access to individuals, and make appearances in visions and dreams or trances to perpetrate their evil activities (Gen. 3:1-6; 2 Cor. 11:13-14).   Due to their close attachment to individuals and families, familiar spirits take advantage of individual treats and family ties to manipulate people in form of ancestral spirits, family yokes, curses, spells and demonic covenants, some Individuals are consequently, held down in addictions, failures, evil tendencies, perversions and pervasive life styles.   Though familiar spirits operate more as influencers, they graduate into possessing and ruling the lives of individuals and families, controlling solely their thoughts, emotions, decisions and actions. (1 Sam. 16:14) as was the case of King Saul, and the legion demoniac of (Mk. 5:1-6).   When familiar spirits get access to Christians they hinder spiritual insight and resist the truth, keeping such persons in spiritual darkness, blindness, and   falsehood. Such Christians, will be given to making blind arguments and prayerlessness. (2 Cor. 4:3-4; 2 Tim. 3:1-8).   Among the strange operations of familiar spirits is the infestation of some physical objects like jewelries, clothes, shoes, cosmetics hairs and other body enhancement articles, which when used by individuals influence the behaviours and attitudes on the negative, though such objects may appear simple and harmless but they attract strange spirits when used or applied – (Deut. 7:25-26).     FREEDOM FROM FAMILIAR SPIRITS
  1. First step into freedom is, a sincere and conscious self-examination to discover if one has any of the experiences listed above and a consequent resolution to be free (1 Cor. 13:5).
  2. A determination to be free and remain free is inevitable (Esth. 4:16).
  3. Renounce all forms of demonic affiliations and involvements (Eph. 5:11).
  4. Surrender totally to Jesus Christ without reservation for only Him can save and wash you in His blood (Rev. 12:11).
  5. Determine to continue in the faith.
  6. Submit to deliverance prayers at the hand of genuine deliverance ministers
  7. Seek to be filled with the Holy Spirit of God to grow in grace (Acts 1:4,5, 2:46,47)
  8. Get engaged in the work of God and be faithful in it (Jn. 15:16)
  9. Share your experience with others and lead them to Christ (Mk. 5:18-20)
  10. Change your companionship from sin partners and worldly friends to sincere believers and serious Christians.
