The subject matter for consideration is one that cannot be over emphasized.   We dwell at a time when knowledge is increasing exponentially and science and technology are breaking bounds that were thought to belong to the realm of the Creator in the fields of medicine, artificial intelligence, astronomy, etc. Life is generally on the fast lane and the tendency in man‟s nature is to give attention to visible thrills (Dan.12:4; Gal.5:17).   God‟s superlative nature does not make any room for rivalry in the lives of His creatures (Exo.20:3; Isa.55:8,9).   We shall define our topic, discuss ways and character of those engaged in it, and conclude with Divine response to the loyal.   The Hebrew word translated “honour” in both subtexts is kâbad (pronounced kaw-bad) which means to be “heavy” (in a good sense numerous, rich, honorable; causatively, to make weighty. It was commanded the children to exhibit it to their parents (Deut.5:16). King Saul requested it from prophet Samuel though himself failed to demonstrate it to God (1Sam.15:30). It is brought by wisdom (Pro.4:8) and foreran by humility (Pro.15:33).   Honouring the Lord therefore means putting great value on the Creator as One of great consequence, stinkingly rich, incomparable size, unrivalled ability (Ps.139:7-10; Isa.40:18,25; 45:5; 46:5).   The Profile of men that Honour God is as follows:
  • They trust and obey God (Gen.12:1-4; 22:1-6, 11; Heb.11:17-19). They demonstrate their faith through action and not just words.
  • They engage in selfless service (Rom.12:1-3; Phil.1:21). They robustly use their treasure and time to serve.
  • They maintain integrity, honouring God‟s principles in all areas of life including work, relationships and finances (Ps.119:128,104; 19:8; Pro.3:9).
  • They prioritize God: choosing His will over personal convenience or worldly pursuits (Judg.11:30-31; Jn.3:26-30; 2Cor.11:23-28; Phil.3:10-14; Heb.10:7,9).
  • They have respect for authority. They put value on any person in position of authority even if they disagree with the person‟s ways or principles (1Sam.24:2-7; 26:7-12). What a lesson to “Christians” that turn against their pastors pouring aspersion as Shimei did to David (2Sam.15:5-13; cp. 1Kgs.2:42-46)?
Such people live honourably among unbelievers showing exemplary character and attitude to work, modelling Jesus‟ character (1Cor.11:1; 1Tim.4:12; 1Pet. 2:13-15, 17-20).   The Divine Response to the Loyal (1Sam.2:30; Gal.6:7)   The Lord is thrilled by the attitude of those that value Him and so reciprocates their honour with divine honour. The honour that we give to God is like a seed that ultimately yields a great harvest.   So whatever honour men give to God, His reciprocation comes in exponential measures in line with His unsearchable ways and ability (Isa. 55:9; 2Cor.9:8; Eph.3:20).   Abraham honoured the Lord and lived in divine security and surplus supply, dying as a stinkingly rich and righteous man (Gen. 24:34-35; Ps.10514-15; Isa.41:8; Jas. 2:23).   King David equally honoured the Lord and enjoyed a reign of prosperity and power as his fame spread around the then-world (1 Chro. 14:17).   Apostle Paul was a man that left all to follow the Lord; he enjoyed divine preservation and intimacy above his colleagues such that Peter testified in his letter (2Pet.3:15-16; 2Tim.4:6-8; 2 Cor. 11:5, 12:11),   At this time when men prefer not to talk about God, if any one chooses to honour Him, the Most High will show Himself faithful to His word (Prov. 3:9,10; 1 Sam 2:30).
