Topic: THE MYSTERY OF MELCHIZEDEK

In this 3
rd phase of our exercise, we shall be dealing on mysteries of the kingdom, starting with the mystery of Melchizedek.
A mystery (Greek musterion) in Bible parlance does not denote a mysterious thing but
that which, being outside of the range of unassisted natural apprehension, can be made known only by divine revelation; and is made known in a manner and at a time appointed by God and to those only who are illuminated by His Spirit.
The word comes from the Greek
muō which means “
to shut the mouth”.
So mystery is a secret through the idea of silence imposed by initiation unto religious rite.
We shall discuss the following points:
- The Man Met By Abram
- The Melchizedek Order
- The Meaning Of The Order Today
Melchizedek was a normal human being who had a kingly and priestly office in Jerusalem. He was favoured to have the revelation of God as EL Elyon (The Lord Most High) and was serving God in that capacity. However, in God’s infinite wisdom the man had been predestined to serve as a type of Christ who would be coming to save mankind. As a result of this election, his birth and death were not recorded. Infact, his genealogy was not recorded. This absence of information (knowledge) would qualify him to serve as
foreshadow of Christ, the eternal one (Mic.5:2; Heb.7:3).
He brought bread and wine which would symbolize the broken body of Greater Melchizedek (Matt.26:26-29; Lk.24:30; 1Cor.11:23-26).
In historical context, bread and wine were often associated with covenant meals.
His name meant king of righteousness and king of peace which would fit into the office of the coming Messiah Who would be the Prince of peace and Champion of righteousness (Isa.9:6; Heb.1:8,9).
Interestingly, though the area was tense and all kings had to identify with some confederacy for self-preservation, and fightings were rife, Melchizedek was not involved in any of such, because the Greater Melchizedek was not going to rob shoulders with the governments of the world (Gen. 14:1-6,13; Jn.6:15).
The drama of great Abram encountering that priestly king and submitting to his superiority by paying tithes to him and receiving his blessing was divinely arranged to show the superiority of the Priestly order that Melchizedek represents over the priestly order that would emanate from the seed of Abram called the Levitical order (Heb.7:4-11,12-17; Ps. 110:4) Priests were human intermediaries between the Most High God and mortal men and the Levitical order was from the family of Aaron, of the tribe of Levi the great grandson of Abraham, who ministered in the old, temporary covenant (Heb.10:1- 3, 11-14; 9:22-25; 7:9-19). So
the encounter was to underscore the superiority of a priesthood that Melchizedek typified (Heb.10:12-14,19-21;7:27).
The Levitical order was powered by natural life that terminates i.e is temporary; but the Melchizedek order was powered by the principle of an endless life (Heb.7:14- 16). Again the Greater Melchizedek Priesthood was not by promise as that of the Levitical order but by an oath. (Heb.7:20-22; Ps.110:1-4). The Levitical Order were men that sinned and needed help, but the Melchizedek order was by a perfect Divine man (Heb.7:26-27; 8:4-10).
- THE MEANING OF THE ORDER TODAY
We are both adopted children of Abraham (Gal. 3:29) and brethren of the Greater Melchizedek (Rom. 8:17; Gal. 3:26), hence are kingly priests (1Pt. 2:5-9; Rev. 1:6, 5:5), Jesus being our High Priest (Heb. 4:14-16)
Unlike the Levitical priests, we have access to the Holy of holies at every moment which thing the Levitical High Priest enjoyed only once a year with dread (Heb. 4:16, 9:7-10; Lev. 16:1-6)
We are to offer spiritual sacrifices which includes praises, consecration, services: evangelism, church work, philanthropy and other good works (Heb. 13:15-16; Tit. 2:14; Rom. 12:2; Eph. 2:10)
Remember, Moses and Elijah came to the mount of transfiguration to witness the ministry of Jesus Who is of the higher order of Melchizedek (Matt. 17:1-5; Jn. 5:46; Rom. 3:21; 1Pt. 1:10)
On tithing, as adopted children of Abraham, we should pay tithes to keep the house of Jesus, which Jesus never disapproved of but rather commended (Matt. 5:17, 23:23; Jms. 4:17)
This is the mystery of Melchizedek.
