Theme: RIDING ON THE HIGH PLACES OF THE EARTH
Texts: Isa.8:18, 49:5, 58:8-11,14
Topic: THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT
Subtext: Gen.12:1-3; Gal.3:7-17
It takes faith to walk with the invisible God as our father Abraham did and had his name engraved in the annals of human history. We have God‟s promise for this era of restoration, jubilation and praise when we shall ride upon the high places of the earth.
We shall draw our lessons from the Abrahamic Covenant.
At this juncture, it is necessary to inform that a covenant is an agreement between two or more partners with respective responsibilities. The culture began long before Abraham was born.
The Hebrew word
Beriyth (pronounced
Ber-eeth) translated covenant means a compact (made by passing between pieces of flesh).
It is worthy to note that the covenant culture before Abram was the slicing of the hand of the partners to elicit blood flow, and the mingling of the blood/sucking and invoking the deity (witness). The culture evolved to cutting or dividing the animal(s); laying the pieces such that the covenanting parties can walk in between them. Thereafter the partners ate a ceremonial meal of bread and salt, signifying that a new family has been born.
The salt was symbolic of peace, like a signature signed that it is finished. This practice continued into the Bible times (Gen. 15:9-18)
The ancient saw covenants as sacred and so obligatory to all parties (cons.
Jos.9:3-27; 2Sam.21:1-3).
When God makes a covenant, it is a law woven in the fabric of space and time (as the natural laws – gravity, etc) Beriyth was used to indicate the laws of nature.
The Hebrew covenant is a permanent thing except it is conditional and defaulting is strongly consequential (cp. 2Sam.21:1-3).
Our message shall come under the following:
The Parts, The Promises and The Power of Abrahamic Covenant.
(A) THE PARTS OF ABRAHAMIC COVENANT
There are 4 distinct parts of the covenant viz (i)
The Call of Abram (Gen12:1-3) where God called Abram to separate from his idolatrous family and follow Him. Promising land and posterity (ii)
The Amplification of the Promise (Gen.15:18-
- where actual property with specific dimensions was promised; seed as numerous as the stars of heaven; blessing of those that will bless him; promise of redemption (iii) The Seal of the Covenant (Gen.17:1-14 ) which is the sign of circumcision (iv) The Obedience and Reciprocal Oath (Gen.22:16-18) where Abraham displayed unrivaled faith and obedience, and the thrilled God converted the promise to an oath.
(B) THE PROMISES OF THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT
Promises are declarations of intent. When God is involved they are counted as done (if the conditionalities are fulfilled) but an oath does not have any conditionality.
There is the promise of
posterity, priesthood and the
promised land.
It must be noted that when God makes a covenant with people, they are counted as His family. He gives them the gift of loving kindness: Hebrew (word
chesed which is love and mercy). This gift makes Him tolerate them and continue to chase them even when they fail. It is called
persistent grace.
(C) THE POWER OF THE COVENANT
The covenant is still operational today, hence the exceptionality of the little nation, Israel.
Glory to God that there was a provision for the gentiles in the covenant through Christ (Gal.3:13,14).
Having been made priest (Rev.1:6; 5:10) we are part of the posterity of Abraham as adopted children and should take the gospel to the nations (Isa.49:5,6; Matt.24:14, 28:19) until we reach the promise land of heaven.
The promise of preservation and favour remains intact.
