  • Topic: THE FOURTH MAN IN THE FIRE
  • Subtext: Dan. 3:8-30
We live at a time when knowledge is increasing exponentially, and a lot of breakthroughs are being witnessed in all faculties of life (Dan. 12: 4). In the scriptures God lamented that His people suffered because of lack of knowledge (Hos. 4:6; Jer. 8:7; Isa. 5:13). Knowledge is the building block of prosperity, for a man is what he knows (Prov. 24:3,45). From our text, the Hebrew children though in exile as captive, had some knowledge  of  the  position  of  their  God  hence  their  earlier  request  (together  with Daniel) to be spared the delicious but defiling meal from the king‘s kitchen (Dan. 1:  8-20).  This  knowledge  was  also  behind  their  refusal  to  bow  to  the  idol  of  the king. And when the king diplomatically addressed the trio, their response was firm:―weneed not defend ourselves in the matter of our disobedience, our God is able to deliver us from the furnace of fire and even if He doesn‘t we won‘t obey!‖And  the  Lord  showed  up  in  the  way  they  might  have  least  expected  (Isa.  55:8; Isa. 43:2). After the episode, God was glorified (Dan. 3:29) and the young men were promoted (Dan. 3:30; Ps. 75:6-7, 30:5). Our message shall come under three points: A) The Fire B) The Fourth Man C) The Faith booster
  1. A) THE FIRE
Fire is naturally speaking, the effect of a process where a fuel source is combusted  to  produce  heat  in  form  of  flames.  It  is  well  known  for  its  destructive effect tagged ―violence of fire‖ (Heb. 11:34). Though very useful to humanity, it is however dreaded by both man and beasts. In the scriptures, fire is a figure of the Persons of the Godhead (Deut. 4:24, 9:3; Jer. 23:2; Mal. 3:2; Matt. 3:11; Acts 2:3). Fire (furnace) symbolizes any condition that is agonizing or destructive, an affliction etc (Isa. 26:11; Hos. 8:14; Joel 1:19; Amos 1:4; Nah. 3:13,15). Consider any pain that you are going through as fire: emotional, physical, marital, academic, spiritual. The  king  in  his  fury  had  ordered  that  the  furnace  be  heated  7  fold  (meaning optimum  capacity), and  it  was  heated  such  that  when  the  portal  to  the  furnace was opened, the fire consumed the men; but it didn‘t hurt the 3 Hebrew children because of the presence of the 4th Man. But who is this 4th Man?
  1. B) THE FOURTH MAN
The 4th Man is a supernatural Being that  the king prophetically described as the Son of God (Dan. 3:25). Since God had only one Son, the 4th man was the pre- incarnate Word of God who severally manifested in the Old Testament as an Angel (Messenger of the Godhead) unto Moses (Ex. 3:2-6), as the Captain of the hosts of heaven (Jos. 5:13-15) and the Rock that supplied water in the wilderness (1 Cor. 10:4; Exo. 17:6). So, He was a Guide to Moses, a Guardian to Joshua and  Guarantor of life to the Israelites. When  He  incarnated,  He attended to  anyone that cared for His  assistance  and  paid the ultimate Price for the redemption of the human race (Isa. 53:10,11; 1 Cor. 6:20; 1 Pt. 1:18-19). He has ability to quench the violence of any fire.
  1. C) THE FAITH BOOSTER
Possessing all the attributes of the Father, He is an ever present Help (Ps. 46:1 cp. Matt. 8:23-27) and considering His price paid for redemption of man, there is nothing that will be too difficult for Him to do for you (Rom. 8:32; Jer. 32:27). Furthermore, He is very aware of everything that is challenging or  will challenge His children in the future and has made provision for that conversion to a testimony (Rom. 8:28; 1 Cor. 10:13). He has the capacity to comfortably quench the violence of any fire. The person going through a trial of faith should know that the Lord is watching (1 Pt.  2),  so  also  should  the  person  undergoing  a divinely  orchestrated  wilderness experience as did Jesus (Mk. 1:12,13). Let‘s  rise  to  call  upon  the  Lord  to  quench  the  violence  of  the  fire  that  is  on  our way or in our life.
