- Texts: Gen. 8:22; Hos. 10:12; Jn. 4:35-38; Gal.6:7
- Topic: THE BELIEVER‟S BOLDNESS
- Subtexts: Pro.28:1; Rom.8:1; 2Tim.1:7
We are in a competitive world where the strong tramples the weak, the wise undo the less knowledgeable, the established blocks the way of the expectant. It is the battle arena where the feeble and fearful stands no chance of survival. So the occultist deploys demons to oppress his neighbours at the place of residence or work (Acts 8:8-13).
The believer must note that meekness and humility as required by the faith does not have anything to do with shyness or timidity: for the righteous is bold (Pro.28:1; 2Tim.1:7).
We shall define boldness, and discuss the characteristics of the bold and its benefits and acquisition.
What is Boldness?
Simply speaking, it is the quality of being strongly assertive. It can be godly or ungodly. The ungodly variety is that kind of boldness that is arrogant ie based
on undue feeling of importance or lack of respect for others (cons. 1Sam.25:1- 13; Matt.25:24-30).
The godly variety is a
Spirit empowered courage that enables a believer to speak and act fearless for God. It is a gift from the Holy Spirit that does not diminish and needs replenishment (Acts 4:29-31).
It adorned the ministry of the early Christians (Mk.16:20; Acts 4:13, 31; 2Cor.7:4; Phil.1:20).
Godly boldness is rooted in right standing with God and confidence in His faithfulness (and never on self-strength). The forgiveness received allows the believer to approach God‟s throne to acquire the needed and live without fear (Heb.4:16; Eph.6:20).
What are the Characteristics of Bold Believers?
- They are grounded in righteousness: so they are honest, confident and brave (Pro.28:1).
- They stand for what they believe in (Acts 4:31, 6:8-15, 7:54-60).
- iii. They are not defeated by an appearance or experience of failure (Pro.24:16).
- They always lean on God and so habitually stay in the presence of the Most High (Matt.27:50-51; Heb.4:16; 10:19-22).
How can One Build or Boost boldness?
Having explained that it is a gift of the Holy Spirit that enables the believer to speak and act fearlessly for God, one must get to the Source.
- Holy Ghost baptism equips the saint with the grace (Acts 2:1-7; 4:31). ii. Prayer for the grace boosts it (Acts 4:29-31).
- iii. There must be the element of personal decision to act for God in order to make the request, for usually the grace is not given to one that is not interested. (Matt.7:6; Acts 4:29-30; 17:6).
A modest consideration of the goodness of God towards one in saving him from sin and the consequences vis-a vis the eternal damnation awaiting the unsaved (including loved ones, relatives, etc) should make a believer seek the gift, so as to engage in evangelism (1Cor.9:16; Rom.1:16) and stand for the truth at all times (Ps. 15:1; Matt. 10:37)
The night is far spent, and the coming of the Master is at hand (Rom.13:12- 14).
The disciples in the early church suffered horrible persecutions and yet continued to preach, what reason shall we proffer for our redundancy?
If you are not living in sin, what then is intimidating you (Pro.28:1; Rom.8:1; 2Tim.1:7)?
Let us rise up to pray.
