The finger of God has been in manifestation with testimonies flowing in from all directions.   Prophet Isaiah relayed God’s choice of the seed of Abraham to be His servant assuring them of His consistent availability, to strengthen and sustain with the right-hand of His righteousness. Reiterating that their antagonists shall be humbled and neutralized, and their own right hand shall be upheld by Him.   In the 54th chapter, God acknowledged the affliction of His people, and promised to keep the covenant of peace, bringing prosperity and peace to the land. Stating the blessedness of righteousness: divine establishment; estrangement to fear and terror; defeat of enemy-coalition; ineffectiveness of enemy-weapons, and empowerment to judge distractors.   That these privileges are the heritage of God’s servants, and their righteousness is of God.   In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus pointed to the power of righteousness when He enjoined all to seek God’s kingdom and His righteousness (Matt.6:33).   We shall expose righteousness and the right-hand of righteousness; then make our applications.   In this introductory message, we shall define the term ‘righteousness’, describe the ‘right-hand’, and deduce the phrase ‘right hand of righteousness’.   (A) RIGHTEOUSNESS DEFINED   The Hebrew word tsedâqâh (pronounced tsed-aw-kaw’) means abstractly rightness; subjectively rectitude; objectively justice; morally virtue. It was translated in Greek dikaiŏsunē (pronounced dik-ah-yos-oo’-nay) which means equity (of character or action).   It is the quality or character of being right or just. It denotes an attribute of God (Rom.3:5). And found in the sayings of the Lord Jesus (i) of whatever is right of just in itself that conforms to the revealed will of God (Matt.5:6,10,20; Jn.16:16:8,10); (ii) whatever has been appointed by God to be acknowledged and obeyed by man (Matt.3:15; 21:32); (iii) the sum total of the requirements of God i.e. all that God expects of His people (Matt.6:33); (iv) religious duties like almsgiving being man’s duty to his neighbor (Matt.6:2-4); prayer: man’s duty to God (Matt.6:5-15); fasting: his duty of self-control (Matt.6:16-18).   It is used of the gracious gift of God to men, whereby one who believes on the Lord Jesus gets into a right relationship with God, and this trust in Christ makes one the righteousness of God in Him (2Cor.5:21). As a gift, it doesn’t come by the works of keeping commandments (Gal.2:16; Rom.3:20). It is called imputed righteousness (Rom.4:6,11).
  • RIGHT-HAND DESCRIBED
The hand most frequently represents the ownership, power or control that its possessor exercises; as seen in the story of the exodus where God’s hand was described as mighty (Exo.3:19-20) and overcame the hand of the Egyptian through miracles (Exo.3:8). It is a symbol of divine power (Exo.4:2; 12:11; 13:9,16; 14:16; 2Kgs.3:15; 5:11). The symbolism was carried on in the New Testament when Jesus and His apostles healed and delivered through the touch of hand (Matt.8:3; Acts 3:7).   Now, in poetic texts, the right hand can be used interchangeably with the hand (Ps.74:11).   So the right hand is a place of salvation, refuge and protection (Ps.16:8); a favoured position for the first born (Gen48:17-18) and for the bride of the king (Ps.45:9). It is a position of advantage and preference (Rom.8:34; Heb.8:1).   In summary, the right hand carries the connotation of strength, power and divine favour.
  • THE RIGHT HAND OF HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS DEDUCED.
Seeing that right hand is symbolic of strength, skill and positive attributes, the right hand of His righteousness has to do with the enigmatic manifestation of His invincible glory following the attainment of His conditionalities.   Such was the case with Joseph who was moved from gulag to the governor’s office (Gen.41:38-44); Abraham, the friend of God who enjoyed a life of divine prosperity irrespective of the fact of being a stranger (Gen.22:15-18; 24:34-35).   Abraham’s offsprings enjoyed this right hand of His righteousness (Ps.105:6-15; Isa.41:8-14; 54:10-17).   The same enjoyment awaits all that will comply with His dictates (Matt.6:33; Ps.110:1-2; 111:6-9; 112:1-10).
