Theme: THINE IS THE KINGDOM, THE POWER AND THE GLORY
Texts: 1Chro.29:10-12; Matt.6:13
So far we have seen the Almighty as the Sovereign over all creation (both mortal and immortal) irrespective of the existence of some rebels.
His kingdom is the sphere in which at any given time His rule is acknowledged. In that realm, His perfect will is enjoyed.
We also showed how all power belongs to Him i.e. He is the ultimate in power (Ps.62:11).
Today, we shall look at the last phrase of the doxology.
Topic: THINE IS THE GLORY
Sub-texts: Ps.19:1; Matt.6:13; Heb.1:1-3
Our texts inform us that God has glory which the heavens declare, which truth the Lord Jesus reiterated; and the Book of Hebrews further revealed that the Lord Jesus Himself was the radiance of that glory, being God‟s exact copy – express Image/Character.
In the doxology of the Lord‟s prayer, He conclusively said „Thine is the kingdom, the power and the GLORY.
In the old testament, Moses, the writer of the Pentateuch requested for the revelation of God‟s glory (Exo.33:18-22), and severally wrote of the manifestation of God‟s glory during the Exodus (Exo.40:34,35; Num.14:10,21,22; 16:19,42; 20:6; Deut.5:24). Later, King David acknowledged that glory belongs to God (1Chro.29:11). The inspired Psalmist introduced the Lord as the King of glory (Ps.24:7,8,9,10) and wrote about the thundering of the glory of God (Ps.29:3)
Prophet Habakkuk revealed of a time when the knowledge of the glory of God will fill the earth (Habk.2:14) and God Himself promised to fill His temple with glory (Hag.2:7)
The Lord Jesus spoke about His Own glory that harmonized with the Father‟s, which shall be revealed at His 2nd advent (Jn.17:5,22,24; Lk.9:26) which Peter, James and John saw at the transfiguration (Lk.9:32).
He revealed during the prayers to His Father of having possessed this glory before the foundation of the earth (Jn.17:5,22,24).
So what is this glory that has been there, and belongs to God (1Chro.29:11)?
The Hebrew word kâbôwd or kâbôd translated “glory” means ‘weight’. Frequently, used for “imposing quantity,” wealth and significant and positive reputation. Abstract meaning includes: imposing presence or position; glory.
In the New Testament, the word dŏxa most commonly translated glory, primarily signifies an opinion, estimate and hence the honour resulting from a good opinion. It may pertain to the nature and acts of God in self- manifestation (Heb. 1:3; Jn. 17:5,24) or the character and ways of God as exhibits through Christ (Jn. 1:14, 2:11, 11:4,40), or the brightness or splendor emanating from God – Shekinah (Exo. 16:10, 25:22).
Dŏxa denotes always a good opinion, praise, honour, glory, an appearance commanding respect, magnificence; manifestation of glory.
Glory varies in degree (Jn. 1:14,16; 2 Cor. 3:10,18), God being the Source from Whom all divine splendor and perfection proceed in their manifestation and to Whom they belong (Eph. 1:17).
IMPLICATION OF THINE IS THE GLORY
Firstly, Being the Father of glory (Eph. 1:17), all things that make for honour, magnificence, praise come from Him, and should be unfailingly supported by Him (Jas. 1:17-18).
Consider the glory that goes with salvation and sanctification experiences (Lk. 8:2; Mk. 16:9-10, 5:1-15; Isa. 6:1-7). What kind of praise will redound to God when an obsessed or severely oppressed is delivered? (Isa. 54:15-17; Ps. 125:3) What about the sudden repentance of a die-hard persecutor? (Acts 8:1,8-10, 9:1-6,29-31).
It will definitely testify good of God if a hopeless is given a hope/desired blessing (Gen. 21:1, 40:14,23, 41:1 -14,25,38-44; Ex. 12:12,29-32; 1 Sam. 1:2 -5,14-19, 2:1); so shall there be for the recovery of lost persons or things (1 Sam. 30:1-6,18; Joel 2:25).
A believer should always remember that the Lord will assist those that implicitly trust Him, who freely act on His word (Num. 23:19; Dan. 12:3; Heb. 11:6; Matt. 14:24-29; Lk. 5:4-8; Jn. 2:6-10).
Secondly, the phrase Thine is the glory also represents an attitude of gratitude for the things that He had done; ascribing the honour to Him
Thirdly, Thine is the glory conveys an impression of one in worship admiring the greatness of God’s power by which He rules over all creation. This expression of worship must not cease from our mouths/hearts.
Let‟s therefore regularly use the divine phrase to make our petitions; praising and worshipping Him Who dwells in the light that no mortal can approach.
