And that anybody that wields God’s word against any antagonistic circumstance draws His might against that hapless situation. We showed that His kingdom rules over all (Dan.2:45; 4:17,25,34).   Today, we shall be considering the second phrase of the doxology.   Topic:            THINE IS THE POWER Sub-texts: Ps. 62:11; Matt.6:13; Lk.24:46-49; Acts 1:6-8; 10:38   The Psalmist affirmed that power belongs to God. The Lord Jesus in His prayer format raised that power belongs to God. And, Luke reporting on the Lord’s terminal discourse showed Him encouraging His disciples to tarry until they were endued with power from on high (heaven). He reiterated the Lord’s terminal statements in the Book of Acts and included the purpose (ie to witness); while Peter linked the success of the Lord’s ministry to His enduement with the Holy Ghost and POWER.   Power is defined as ‘an ability or capacity to do something, capability or capacity to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.   These definitions suit our topic but more particularly, the word translated power in our texts is Gk. Dunamis which means inherent power; specifically miraculous power. It almost always points to new and higher forces that have entered and working in this lower world of ours. Dunamis covers powers or ability, (physical or moral) as residing in a person or thing. Dunamis is sometimes used of the miracle or sign itself, the effect being put for the cause itself.   The Scriptures reveal that the Lord does not only own power (Ps.62:11-12; Isa.43:13) but also determines the distribution (Isa.40:29; Matt. 25:14,15; 1Cor.4:7; Heb.1:8,9).   He is at liberty to manifest it in favour of whomsoever He wants and cannot be queried (Rom.9:15-16).   God’s power does not have limitations i.e. there is nothing too hard or impossible with the power (Jer.32:27; Matt.19:26).   However, God is principled and not prodigal with His gifts/power (Matt.7:6; Ps.103:7) He is influenceable and positively responds to anybody that rightly influences Him: unleashing this tremendous power in favour of such (Exo.20:6; Num. 12:1-10, 16:15-33; Jos. 6:20; 1 Kgs. 18:30-39; 2 Kgs.18:4-7; 2 Chro. 14:2-6,8-15; 20:1-3, 14-18, 21-24; Acts 10:38; Heb.1:8,9).   On the other hand, He withdraws or withholds this power from people that disobey or dishonor Him (Exo.20:5; Deut.28:14-16; Josh.7:1-5; 1Sam.2:30; 2Kgs.3:21-27; 2 Chro.16:7-9; Isa.59:1-2).   God’s goodness gives Him a disposition to do good to mortal man, thus always willing to forgive the offenders and favour them (Ezek.33:14-16; 18:23; Matt. 5:45).   Now note: the tremendous power of God can be demonstrated by the direct action of the Holy Spirit (Gen.1:1-25; Eph.1:17,19 ) or through angelic activities (Exo.33:2; 2Kgs.19:32-35; Matt.26:53; Acts 12:3-11; Heb.1:6; 12:22) or through human angels (Acts 10:38, 9:32-40, 8:5-13; 2 Kgs. 15:1-15).   This unlimited ultimate power cannot be successfully resisted by any creature (Isa.43:13). Any purported resistance is just to buy little time (Dan.10:9-11; Isa.55:11, 46:9-11; Pro.19:21). The early church experienced not only the cross but also the resurrection (Acts 3:1-8; 5:14-20; 8:5-20).   IMPLICATION:   The realization that power belongs to God should make anybody in a vantage position to stay humble before God at all times. This truth was neglected by Nebuchadnezzar, and he paid for it (Dan.4:25-35; Ps.62:11,12).   The appreciation of the unfathomable power possessed by the Almighty would make any child of God lead a stress free, faithful, praise-packed prosperous life (cons. Eph.1:17,19; Phil.3:10).   The believer’s life is dominated by either the problems he sees or the promises he trusts. We must therefore trust in the promises of the Omnipotent El Shaddai (Ps.119:49-50).   All Power must submit to the ultimate:   The child of God must also learn how to put any unsavoury situation in a collision course with God’s indefatigable power by making a right argument using the scriptures (Isa. 46:10; Jer. 23:29; 2 Chro. 20:5-12, 14-17).   We must habitually declare in reverence and humility that power belongs to the Lord, and wield the truth against every opposition that comes our way. God is obliged to act (Ps. 138:2; Isa. 55:10-11; Jer. 1:12; Matt. 24:35).
