Theme: RIDING ON THE HIGH PLACES OF THE EARTH
Texts: Isa.8:18, 49:5, 58:8-11,14
Topic: GUARD YOUR PRECIOUS SOUL
Subtexts: Prov. 4:20-25
As the church age approaches its terminus at break neck speed, every believer must take optimum care to watch and avoid “unforced errors”. The soul is the part of man that believers appear least conscious about, yet therein lies the source of the issues of life – hence the designation “Precious” in our theme.
The enemy understands the place of the soul and uses this advantage to undo many Christians causing terrible backslidings, and aborting divine destinies, breaking relationships and turning churches to citadels of Babel and all manner of demeaning vices. (Cons. 2Cor. 10:5)
For anyone to reach his destination and optimally or spectacularly perform, he needs to know the workings of the soul/mind/heart.
We shall explore the human soul and its dynamics, the dangers of an unsecured soul, and divine counsel on soul preservation.
Man is triune in nature: spirit, soul and body (1Thess. 5:23). The body is the visible part that makes direct contact with the terrestrial plane through its senses, while the spirit and soul are within and invisible. The Hebrew word
Lêbâb (pronounced
lay-bawb) most frequently translated as heart refers to the
mind. That word was sometimes used for inner part or middle part of a thing (1Sam. 16:17) and sometimes referred to a man‟s personality (Gen. 17:17). So, we have the heart which is a synonym of the mind. Then the Hebrew word
Nephesh was used for the
soul. The Hebrew
ruwach (pronounced
roo’-akh) translated
spirit means breath, violently exhaled breath, wind, by resemblance spirit but only of a rational being. It was also translated
mind (5x)
In the New Testament, Gk word
psuche (
psoo-khay’) was translated as
‘soul’ and means breath, the animal sentient principle that animates the body and
shows itself in breathing. It is the seat of feeling, desire, affection, and aversions. The word
pneuma meaning
‘current of air’ was translated as
spirit.
For this study, we shall see the soul as the seat of the
mind (the location where anxiety occurs (Lk. 12:29-31) and doubt arises (Rom. 14:23)),
will, emotions, feelings, desires, and
affection. The mind is seen as the part of us that thinks, reasons, and processes information, essentially our conscious thought process.
The soul is like the control room of the man, receiving information from both and spirit and the body to guide the actions of the man. The spirit man receives information from the Holy Spirit via impulses and dreams and transmits to the soul which decodes for action; and the soul also receives impulses from the body for action on what to do, where to go, how to act etc.
- THE WEAKENED SOUL’S EFFECT
As one thinks, so is the person‟s life (Prov. 23:7). The type of though prevalent in the mind affects both body and spirit. Negative thoughts can cause bitterness which defiles the spirit (Heb. 12:14,15) and can cause the release of stress hormones that destroy the physical body (Prov. 17:22). Bad emotions are destructive and so the place of emotional intelligence cannot be over emphasized. Homes, businesses, churches have been destabilized because of bad emotions. (Prov. 14:29)
Irritability is not the best for relationship as nobody desires to stay around a highly irritable person (Prov. 22:24,25). Unhealthy/ungodly ambitions destroy divine destiny as the uncanny ambition pulls the victim out of God‟s will.
Ungodly affection causes sins that ruin spiritual and physical lives, for out of the soul are the issues of life (Prov. 4:23; Matt. 5:27-28) Whatever is permitted into the soul, determines what emerges from it; and what emerges from it affects the wellness of the body and the spirit.
Having seen the pivotal role the soul plays in the overall well being of a man, wisdom demands that rapt attention be given to it (Prov. 1:24-26,33, 4:23, 8:17; Rom. 12:1-2)
One must check the routes of reception of information to ensure that nothing toxic reaches it. The routes of entry of information are (a) Physical:
sense organs eyes, ears etc (b) spiritual: spiritual arrows shot as thoughts, dreams, visions etc. (2Cor. 10:5)
The wary must therefore train the eyes to focus on gracious things and avoid visual pollutants (Job 14:1) and stay away from sources of information that will tamper with the health of the soul. (1Cor. 15:33; Prov. 9:6, 19:27) Endeavoring to identify with God fearing like-minded people (Prov. 13:20)
The word of God is used to neutralize any arrows shot from the powers of darkness (2Cor. 10:3-5)
Therefore, to ride on the high places of the earth, the believer must keep his precious soul with all diligence.
